The FSB, together with the Ministry of Internal Affairs, detained 14 members of the REvil hacker group. They seized 426 million rubles, including in cryptocurrency, $600,000, €500,000, and 20 premium cars, the press service of the FSB reported.
Detentions took place at 25 addresses in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Moscow, Leningrad, and Lipetsk regions. Cybercriminals developed malicious software (software), stole money from the bank accounts of foreigners, and cashed it out, including by buying expensive goods on the Internet
In total, 14 members of REvil were detained, from whom more than 426 million rubles were seized, including in cryptocurrency, $600 thousand, €500 thousand, as well as computer equipment, crypto wallets used to commit crimes, 20 premium cars.
It is noted that the hacker group has ceased to exist, its information infrastructure has been neutralized. The detained hackers were charged under Part 2 of Art. 187 of the Criminal Code “Illegal circulation of means of payment”.
The reason for the detention was the appeal of the competent authorities of the United States, the report says. They gave the FSB information about the leader of REvil and his involvement in attacks on the information resources of foreign high-tech companies through the introduction of malware, encryption of information, and extortion of money for its decryption.
Russian law enforcement officers informed representatives of the competent US authorities about the operation.
